The Agenda 2030, with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), outlines a global vision for sustainable development. Yet, halfway to 2030, progress remains insufficient. Achieving the SDGs requires acknowledging their interlinkages and adopting multi-level, multi-sector, and inclusive governance approaches. Territorial approaches are crucial in this context, offering systemic, context-specific, and spatially anchored methods to integrate multiple SDGs and address inequalities.

Key Messages

  • Holistic Framework: Territorial approaches foster coherent governance by integrating social, environmental, and economic dimensions.
  • Inclusive Development: These approaches address inequalities, prioritizing women, youth, indigenous peoples, and marginalized communities.
  • Resilience and Sustainability: They support sustainable food systems, climate adaptation, and biodiversity protection.
  • Lessons Learned: The updated 2023 White Paper builds on key milestones since 2018, offering actionable recommendations for policymakers, donors, and practitioners.
  • Global Importance: Territorial approaches are essential for bridging rural-urban divides and aligning local actions with global SDG ambitions.

About UNCCD

The largest, most influential event on how governments are handling land is the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which this year convened for the 15th time: UNCCD COP15.

For two weeks in May, leaders ranging from presidents, ministers, and financiers to heads of the community and youth representatives gathered in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire to strategize how to limit land degradation, raise funds for sustainable land management, and further the land rights of marginalized groups, women and young people.

TMG at COP 15

TMG and partners bring the “Rights to Land” agenda to COP 15. TMG co-hosted four side events at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP 15) that explored practical entry points to empower communities that depend most on land and natural resources to claim their legitimate rights and fulfill their rightful roles as stewards of these precious resources for the benefit of people and planet.

This video presents highlights of TMG participation and reflections from diverse partners and collaborators. Many thanks to the various speakers and contributors to the events. TMG participation at COP 15 was supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

With the population set to reach at least 9 billion by 2050, there is no question that building adequate, inclusive, biodiverse, resilient and safe food systems for all will be one of the defining challenges of our time. How we get there, however, is less clear – especially in the wake of a global pandemic.

In this paper, World Agroforestry (ICRAF), the IUCN and GIZ assess the viability of modern agriculture against the backdrop of Covid-19, bringing to light the strains that economic downturns, declining exports and restrictions on travel have placed on food systems around the world, while laying out the steps necessary to drive transformative change and cultivate resilience in agricultural landscapes going forwards.

GLF Bonn 2020

How to feed the world without eating the planet? The 2020 theme of the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) is “Food and Livelihoods.” Today, food production and agricultural systems are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, a main driver of deforestation, and the greatest threat to biodiversity. It’s time to transform this problem into an opportunity.

GLF 2020 is the first environmental digital conference of its kind – with over 300 speakers, hundreds of organizations, 235,000 engagements on social media, 22,000 messages plus 2,500 articles exchanged among participants – highlighted the need for platforms like GLF to continue including the voices of diverse knowledge holders from every corner of the world.

Sustainable wood value chains are contributing to food security  in Sub-Saharan Africa

One of the most important contributions of forests to food security is the provision of wood fuel. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 60% of households use wood fuel to cook, boil water, and preserve food. But unsustainable wood fuel production and trade are depleting and degrading forests and trees.

Despite its socio-economic importance, woodfuel production and trade is still a mostly informal sector. It is not organized, it has weak or inadequate legal frameworks, and it contributes little to government revenues.

The lack of woodfuel governance, in combination with increasing demand, results in unsustainable wood harvesting that causes forest degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. In contrast, sustainable woodfuel value chains can positively contribute to livelihoods, by generating both household income from trade and a secure supply of cooking fuel, while mitigating negative environmental impacts.

There is a need for an integrated approach to woodfuel value chain dynamics that considers multiple functions of forest-agricultural landscapes and outcomes for livelihoods and forest governance.

This session provides documented experience on how better practices within woodfuel value chains and related governance can positively transform woodfuel sectors to benefit livelihoods, through both energy supply and income-generating activities, while reducing negative environmental impacts on forest-agricultural landscapes and mitigating climate change.

Check out the GLF Bonn Digital Conference 2020 Outcome Statement.

Originally titled “Sustainable wood-fuel value chains for food security in Sub-Saharan Africa”, this session hosted by CIFOR aired on June 4th, 2020 at the GLF Bonn Digital Conference.
