Working towards Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) requires reaching agreement on a shared landscape vision and strategy among stakeholders who have different and sometimes competing priorities, often with diverse interests, perspectives, influence, cultures and languages, and sometimes with histories of conflict. Though each landscape is singular, LPs all encounter common challenges in carrying out collaborative action. To make the process easier, more effective and more inclusive, the 1000L initiative offers this Practical Guide to ILM. The guide provides a generic, locally adaptable, conceptual process and practical guidance for carrying out ILM.

The 1000L coalition created this Practical Guide to ILM by incorporating the collective experience of 1000L partners. The guide refers users to a supplemental tool guide of suggested tools that can support collaborative landscape planning and action. 1000L is creating additional tools and resources to further support these processes and serve the diverse needs of LPs worldwide.

As the global UN Conferences of Parties on Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Desertification unfold, Africa stands at a pivotal moment in shaping a greener, more resilient future.

With less than a decade left to achieve the critical global goals set for 2030, the window to act is closing fast. Africa must seize this moment to leverage local knowledge, advance technology, and mobilize sustainable finance to lead the charge in creating a thriving, climate-resilient future for generations to come.

On 17 September, 3,500 participants gathered at the GLF Africa Hybrid Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, and online to build a greener and more resilient future in Africa.

Key takaways

  1. Accelerate landscape restoration and integrated landscape management
  2. Center local communities for lasting solutions
  3. Secure land rights and strengthen governance frameworks
  4. Build a restoration economy
  5. Leverage technology and open data
  6. Foster partnerships and cross-sector collaborations

About GLF Africa 2024

Can Africa show the world a sustainable way forward? The climate crisis is taking a toll on Africa – and especially on rural communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

On 17 September, thousands of participants gathered at ‘GLF Africa 2024: Greening the African Horizon’ in Nairobi, Kenya, and online for a global conference focused on forging a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa’s land- and seascapes, driven by local solutions.

Introducing PILA: A New Framework for Sustainable Agricultural Transformation and Landscape Management

A new framework to support countries in transforming agricultural systems by scaling up sustainable production, restoring ecosystems and alleviating pressure on forests to improve food value chains will soon be put to the test.

The Participatory Informed Landscape Approach, known as PILA, uses an integrated landscape management approach to accelerate the transformation of value chains at the landscape level. PILA, developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as part of the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program, is now being piloted in India, Kenya, Nicaragua, Nigeria and Vietnam.

Hosted by FOLUR, this session brings together experts and landscape actors implementing PILA to discuss the role of integrated landscape management, how decisions across the value chain are made and the role of smallholder farmers.

About this session

The Rainforest Alliance is pioneering integrated landscape management (ILM) approaches across five thriving landscapes globally as part of the 1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People initiative. One of the biggest challenges in implementing ILM is weak governance, inadequate finance and siloed approaches towards addressing the triple crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution, which are driving rural poverty and human rights abuses. We seek to strengthen our alliance to drive impact at scale in line with our strategy.

This interactive session provides delegates with an opportunity to learn and interact with seasoned experts on integrated landscape management approaches with examples from Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It will also provide a platform to share best practices and experiences on landscape governance, financing models, innovative tools to measure landscape progress and maturity, and partnerships to support smallholders transitioning to regenerative agriculture and sustainable commodities.

GLF Climate: Frontiers of Change

Hosted on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, and online, GLF Climate 2022: Frontiers of Change united 7,000 participants from 164 countries and rallied over 27 million people on social media around what humanity can still do to avoid the worsening impacts of the climate crisis.

Featuring 228 leading scientists, activists, Indigenous leaders, financiers, youth and government leaders, and 96 incredible partner organizations, the second edition of GLF Climate called for a just transition to a stewardship economy that puts people and nature first.

Key insights and lessons from the Landscapes For Our Future (LFF) programme

With most of the Landscapes For Our Future (LFF) programme’s 22 projects well past the inception phase and into implementation, it’s time to start sharing key insights and lessons. Where better to do so than at GLF Climate alongside COP27? This is a venue most appropriate to LFF’s ambitions – in particular, its interest in delivering solutions and innovative practices to address the triple planetary crises.

This session, hosted by the LFF Central Component, brings together relevant stakeholders and some of LFF’s projects from the Global South to highlight innovative approaches and methods to tackle climate mitigation and adaption using the Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) approach, as well as introducing the overall programme vision. High-level speakers from the EU and ILM global experts set the stage for the program, with particularly important messages revealing the importance the EU places on ILM as one of a basket of solutions to addressing climate change.

GLF Climate 2021: Outcome Statement https://www.globallandscapesforum.org/publication/glf-climate-2021-outcome-statement/ Tue, 21 Dec 2021 02:24:10 +0000 https://www.globallandscapesforum.org/?post_type=publication&p=47990 The planet is on track for three degrees of global warming by the year 2100, and scientists say we could soon reach negative tipping points for climate change and biodiversity loss, beyond which it may be difficult or impossible for us to return. But are there also positive tipping points that could strengthen our efforts to address these crises? If so, how can we trigger them?

The planet is on track for three degrees of global warming by the year 2100, and scientists say we could soon reach negative tipping points for climate change and biodiversity loss, beyond which it may be difficult or impossible for us to return. But are there also positive tipping points that could strengthen our efforts to address these crises? If so, how can we trigger them?

From 5–7 November 2021, on the sidelines of the 26th session of the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 26), GLF Climate: Forests, Food, Finance – Frontiers of Change sparked a global discussion on exactly this question.

The message is clear: the health of people and the planet requires collective actions, individual behavioral changes, and enabling and enforcing government policies and investments that put nature and people first.

The GLF Climate has racked up a record over 1 million views—and counting—from over 140 countries, reached more than 42 million people on social media, and provided a crucial platform for 400 speakers – of which 50 percent were women.

A compilation of insight from all those involved, this Outcome Statement summarizes the conference’s key messages and contains quotes from across the 67 plenaries, interactive sessions, launches and climate talks that took place in English, Spanish and French.
