The 1000L coalition created this Practical Guide to ILM by incorporating the collective experience of 1000L partners. The guide refers users to a supplemental tool guide of suggested tools that can support collaborative landscape planning and action. 1000L is creating additional tools and resources to further support these processes and serve the diverse needs of LPs worldwide.

Land degradation impacts over 3.2 billion people globally. Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) aims to restore ecosystems and improve human well-being but faces challenges, especially regarding property rights and governance. Global initiatives, such as the Bonn Challenge and AFR100, aim to restore millions of hectares of degraded land by 2030. Ethiopia, Madagascar, and Togo have committed to specific restoration targets. This policy brief focuses on how land tenure systems in these countries affect FLR implementation and highlights best practices for improving restoration efforts.

Key messages

• Tenure and land governance models are decisive factors of FLR success.
• Tenure arrangements and who benefits from FLR must be well-defined prior to implementation. Different approaches exist from individual land tenure to communal.
• Significant gaps in communal land use policies still exist and need to be addressed.
• There is a lack of inter-sectoral cooperation between land and forestry authorities, creating need to improve coordination and transparency between sectors and stakeholders.

This session provided an overview of the Global Peatlands Assessment (GPA), the most comprehensive assessment of peatlands to date. It explored the global distribution of peatlands, showcasing the Global Peatland Map and other hotspot maps to discuss mapping methodologies and identify existing gaps. Key challenges for decision-makers were highlighted, along with policy and governance recommendations. Additionally, peatland action and stakeholder engagement strategies were explored, emphasizing the vital role of the private sector and civil society in effective conservation, restoration, and sustainable management. Key activities and partnerships were outlined for future planning and action.

This report summarizes findings and recommendations from a 15-month study initiated to advance understanding of the use of landscape and jurisdictional approaches as a key corporate strategy for downstream and midstream companies to achieve sustainable sourcing and have positive impacts in the regions they are sourcing from.

The study identified 113 companies supporting landscape and jurisdictional initiatives across 91 initiatives, in 19 countries. Recommendations have been drawn from the research for downstream and midstream companies to mobilize more private sector action.

Key recommendations for companies

• Increase landscape-scale action and integrate it into corporate sustainability and business strategy
• Invite and/or incentivize other private sector actors to take landscape-scale action
• Spotlight multi-stakeholder collaboration to transition towards sustainable land use at scale
• Align resources and efforts in committed and/or progressing landscape and jurisdictions.

The report contains three further recommendations for the wider community working with landscape and jurisdictional approaches. Using the results from the research, a business case is presented in the report for companies to see the opportunities and assist the transformation to sustainable commodity production through multi-stakeholder collaboration at scale.

This report is part of a global study that aims to understand how midstream and downstream companies have been using landscape and jurisdictional approaches to address commodity-driven deforestation. The study includes five commodity specific reports on cocoa, palm oil, pulp, paper and packaging, beef and soy landscape-scale action as well as this final summary report. The study also delves deeper into other possible uses of these approaches, in a report on meeting corporate climate, nature and people goals.
