Presented at the 7th GLF Investment Case Symposium, Rewarding Nature: A Roadmap to Finance the Biodiversity Plan, held in Cali, Colombia, alongside COP16, this outcome statement outlines six building blocks for financing biodiversity to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

  1. Recognizing Nature’s Value: Incentivize sustainable practices through Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and biodiversity certifications.
  2. Empowering Local Communities: Provide fair funding and capacity-building for Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
  3. Landscape-Based Solutions: Promote integrated, cross-sectoral approaches for large-scale biodiversity impact.
  4. Domestic Finance & Subsidy Reform: Strengthen national funding mechanisms and redirect harmful subsidies.
  5. Private Investment Mobilization: Encourage biodiversity-positive investments through blended finance and de-risking strategies.
  6. Raising Ambition: Scale global funding commitments and simplify access to financial resources for conservation projects.

This roadmap highlights innovative and collaborative solutions to finance biodiversity, ensuring nature and communities thrive together.

About GLF Africa 2024

Can Africa show the world a sustainable way forward? The climate crisis is taking a toll on Africa – and especially on rural communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

On 17 September, thousands of participants gathered at ‘GLAF Africa 2024: Greening the African Horizon’ in Nairobi, Kenya, and online for a global conference focused on forging a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa’s land- and seascapes, driven by local solutions.

This preliminary assessment of rights-based approaches (RBAs) seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussions of RBAs for Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPs and LCs). RBAs purposefully position the recognition of, respect for, and access to individual and collective rights as central to an initiative’s planning, design, implementation, process monitoring, and outcomes. In mainstream climate change, conservation, and development programs and policies, this means refocusing the relationship between “beneficiaries” and “implementers” to one of rights-holders and duty-bearers. RBAs hold growing discursive importance in relation to the rights of IPs and LCs in conservation and climate change spheres, including the agendas of international agencies. The growing interest in RBAs, and their inclusion in frameworks that will guide development, conservation, and climate projects over the next decade, is laudable. However, few reviews seek to understand how RBAs emerged and how they have been conceptualized. Such analysis is a necessary basis from which to advance discussions on the impact of RBAs and provide lessons to support them. In this review, our primary interest is the conception, conceptualization, and implementation of RBAs in forest-based initiatives, but we reviewed the wider scholarly and gray literature on RBAs in development, conservation, and climate action initiatives.

About GLF Peatlands 2024

Peatlands cover 3-4% of Earth’s land but store a third of global soil carbon. Despite their importance, 12% are degraded, contributing 4% of human-induced emissions.

Degradation, driven by agriculture and forestry, causes environmental and social issues like fires and economic damage. Managing peatlands effectively requires collaboration across sectors.

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Peatlands 2024 Hybrid Conference brought together global stakeholders to address gaps in peatland science, policy, and practice. Held alongside the UNFCCC Bonn Climate Change Conference, it explored peatlands’ roles in carbon storage, biodiversity, and water regulation.

Protecting peatlands in Ukraine

Ukraine has roughly 1 million hectares of total peatland area, yet the regions of Volyn and Chernihiv are deemed inaccessible due to military actions from the 2022 occupation. Yet, even before the invasion, Ukrainian communities suffered from the annual burning of peatlands and the disappearance of groundwater in the landscapes, the result of the drainage of wetlands during Soviet times. Roman Shakhmatenko, team lead, UNDP Ukraine Energy and Environment Portfolio, speaks on the role of peatlands in the country and national measures to protect these areas.
