7th GLF Investment Case Symposium

How can we raise $200 billion a year for biodiversity and climate?  From 21 October to 1 November 2024, global leaders gathered in Cali, Colombia, for the 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16), tackling critical issues like ecosystem protection, climate action, and food security. The 7th GLF Investment Case Symposium, the largest sustainable finance event in the Global South, explored how to fund these efforts, including the role of emerging tech like Artificial Intelligence (AI) in finding innovative solutions.

Inspiration Hub: Showcasing Stories of Innovation and Impact (Spanish & English)

Funding with purpose: Territorial Funds as a Pathway to Enable Women-led Initiatives

This conversation will focus on the potential of territorial funds to support Indigenous and local women in biodiversity-rich landscapes. Panelists will share their expertise on the practical challenges of establishing and managing territorial funds to ensure they effectively meet the needs of women-led initiatives. The discussion will also highlight the barriers women face in protecting their rights and explore how territorial funds can help overcome these challenges.

Women in leadership roles are crucial to shifting power dynamics. By placing women at the center of decision making – allocating grants and directing resources – territorial funds can leverage the strength of strong, community-driven relationships to create lasting impact.

About this session

Women play a key role in sustainable agriculture and land-based livelihoods, supporting food security and biodiversity. However, they are especially vulnerable to climate change due to their dependence on land resources. Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, are making once-productive land barren, fueling conflict and migration.

Gender inequality further limits women’s control over land, leaving those in poverty unable to defend their rights. Secure land rights are essential for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and restoration efforts. Organizations like ILC Africa work to strengthen women’s land tenure rights, building resilience and fostering a sustainable future for all.

About Vandana Shiva

For over 50 years,Vandana Shiva has advocated seeing the Earth as a living entity, challenging the prevailing notion of it as inert matter for ceaseless extraction. Shiva calls for a paradigm shift, emphasizing the need to break free from the cycle of relentless exploitation and instead foster a sustainable and respectful relationship with our living planet:

“My vision for Earth today, in the middle of the threatened collapse, is the same of vision with which I started my ecological life 50 years ago. And the vision is that the Earth is living and we need to get out of the illusion that she’s just dead matter for extraction and explotation for the next round and the next round and the next round.”
