About GLF Africa 2024

Can Africa show the world a sustainable way forward? The climate crisis is taking a toll on Africa – and especially on rural communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods.

On 17 September, thousands of participants gathered at ‘GLF Africa 2024: Greening the African Horizon’ in Nairobi, Kenya, and online for a global conference focused on forging a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa’s land- and seascapes, driven by local solutions.

About this session

Women play a key role in sustainable agriculture and land-based livelihoods, supporting food security and biodiversity. However, they are especially vulnerable to climate change due to their dependence on land resources. Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, are making once-productive land barren, fueling conflict and migration.

Gender inequality further limits women’s control over land, leaving those in poverty unable to defend their rights. Secure land rights are essential for climate change mitigation, adaptation, and restoration efforts. Organizations like ILC Africa work to strengthen women’s land tenure rights, building resilience and fostering a sustainable future for all.

About Ya la Terre film

The film tells the story of Brice, a young Gabonese farmer practicing peri-urban agriculture in Libreville, highlighting his deep connection to the land. Following the screening, Otsobogo will engage in a thoughtful discussion, sharing her journey as a filmmaker, the founding of the Masuku Environment Festival in Gabon and the creative process behind Ya La Terre. This session offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of storytelling and environmental consciousness in African cinema.

Nadine Otsobogo is a Gabonese filmmaker with several productions to her name, including Dialemi, which won the Bronze Stallion of Yennenga at FESPACO 2013. Dialemi was also recognized by the César Academy as one of the 35 best short films of 2015. Nadine founded the Masuku Film Festival, which brings together filmmakers from around the world to focus on themes of nature and the environment.

Rising temperatures, changes in precipitation, and other effects of climate change are undeniably affecting the ecosystems, biodiversity, and local communities in East Africa. The region has been subject to more frequent and intense rainfall events, floods, and droughts in recent decades, impacting the livelihoods of millions of people. With almost 70 percent of the economy in East Africa relying on agriculture, climate change effects have the potential to undermine or even reverse progress made toward improving the socio-economic well-being of the region’s inhabitants.

The Rainforest Alliance has been working with coffee and tea farmers in East Africa for more than 30 years to advance sustainable agriculture practices across vulnerable landscapes and watersheds. Rainforest Alliance’s vision for the region is to build and reinforce connections among farming communities, commodity companies, civil society organizations, and governments, and to promote sustainable production practices to benefit people and nature through an integrated landscape management approach.

The urgency to address climate change and meet the Paris Agreement’s goals has propelled the focus on sustainable peatland use and restoration. Paludiculture, the productive utilization of wet and rewetted peatlands while preserving peat, has emerged as a solution to prevent further degradation while generating revenue.

Key Messages

  1. Preserving peatlands: Paludiculture aims to conserve peat by maintaining high water tables, which are crucial for inhibiting decomposition and facilitating peat formation. By cultivating facultative or obligate wetland plants, paludiculture fosters conditions conducive to peat conservation.
  2. Sustainable utilization: While harnessing biomass for economic purposes, paludiculture ensures the sustainability of peatlands. By selectively harvesting aboveground biomass and avoiding disturbance to underground parts, it minimizes disruptions to peat formation processes, thereby promoting long-term sustainability.
  3. Diverse applications: Paludiculture encompasses various agricultural systems, including permanent grassland and cropping techniques. These methods not only offer economic opportunities but also contribute to nature conservation objectives, provided careful consideration is given to regional regulations and species selection to prevent adverse environmental impacts.

Can biodiversity revolutionize agroecosystems for resilience?

Discover how agroecosystems rely on biodiversity at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels for essential services like soil structure, nutrient cycling, and pollination. Uncover the resilience these systems gain from biodiversity, making them more robust against disturbances.

The video calls for a return to biodiverse and sustainable agricultural practices by integrating traditional knowledge with science. Questioning the marginalization of traditional knowledge, it advocates for its re-application in modern educational and agricultural systems for transformative change.
