Working for a prosperous and sustainable Africa

Africa is now the world’s youngest continent, with young people being the majority in many of the region’s countries. Whether they live in the cities and towns of the rapidly urbanizing continent, or in rural villages and settlements; whether they come from middle-class backgrounds or from vulnerable families that are living in poverty, one thing is certain: these young people are ambitious to work for a prosperous and sustainable Africa.

However, unemployment is one of the main problems that young people face across the continent. On top of that, in the absence of adequate social safety nets, young people are compelled to take low-productivity and low-wage jobs for their very survival.
In this context, the Youth in Landscapes Initiative organized the GLF Africa Job Fair 2022 on September 14 (16:00-18:00 CEST; 17:00- 19:00 EAT), with the aim of providing students and young professionals in the YIL network and beyond with opportunities for networking with organizations and companies in sectors and fields that support people and nature across Africa.

Around the world, countries are failing to crack down on the drivers of biodiversity loss. None of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets for 2020 have been met, and according to WWF’s most recent Living Planet Index, an estimated 1 million species (500,000 animals and plants and 500,000 insects) are now threatened with extinction. To turn the tide on the emergency going forwards, adequate financing mechanisms will be required to boost investment in conservation and restoration. Promising trends towards sustainable finance, impact investment and responsible production will need to be scaled, and instruments to ensure that investment plans are evaluated for their potential risk to nature will need to be strengthened.

This session brings together expert practitioners from the public and private sectors to discuss existing approaches in the field of financial instruments, good practices and lessons learned, as well as how to bring successful approaches to scale, and link COVID-19 response measures to financing for a biodiversity-friendly future.

Nature is the basis for our existence, for food security and economic activity in general. Yet it faces ever more pressure from human intervention: intensive agriculture and unregulated fishing, deforestation and mining. This trend needs to be halted, which is only possible if the economy becomes “green” and agriculture more sustainable. That, however, requires the right impulses and a lot of capital. The discussion in this session at GLF Bonn 2020 circles around the question of if and how public funds could be used to promote sustainable production patterns. What should incentives look like? Are there effective tools available? Where are possible pain points? Representatives from NGOs, the private and the public sector take a critical look at these and related issues.

Originally titled “Incentives for a green economy: new means to promote sustainable production methods”, this session hosted by KfW aired on June 5th, 2020 at the GLF Bonn Digital Conference.

On 30 November 2019, the Global Landscapes Forum convened in Luxembourg for its fourth annual Investment Case Symposium, this year examining the question: How can we move sustainable land-use financing into the mainstream? Held back-to-back with the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Regional Roundtable on Sustainable Finance, the event brought together nearly 500 of the world’s leaders of sustainable finance institutions with politicians, researchers and practitioners – joined by 6,500 more online, and 6.7 million on social media – to ease the process of channeling investment into landscape sustainability projects and supply chains. Discussions focused on the development of cutting-edge financial tools and mechanisms, ways to overcome investment risks, financial needs in landscapes, and new policies being enacted to increase the amount of money going to create sustainable landscapes for the future. The event was co-organized by Luxembourg for Finance and hosted by the Luxembourg Government.

The Global Landscapes Forum’s fourth Investment Case symposium, GLF Luxembourg 2019, contributed to the ongoing discussion on sustainable finance and moved the conversation forward with practical suggestions and next steps. The event took place back-to-back with the U.N. Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Regional Roundtable at the European Convention Centre in Luxembourg, which is rapidly establishing itself as the continent’s sustainable finance hub. The conference highlighted the variety and conviction of environmentally-conscious entrepreneurship and the breadth of the coalition – governments, non-profits, banks and other enterprises – that has assembled to support it.

The premise of this report is that there is an urgent need to increase financing for restoration, and there are many pathways to make this happen.

This publication explains seven key barriers to investment in restoration and highlights policy solutions and financial mechanisms—many of which are already in play—that can be used to overcome these barriers. Through a discussion of the financial and economic issues surrounding restoration, the report encourages governments and practitioners to conduct analyses and enact strategies that support forest and landscape restoration.

Economic analysis can encourage investment in restoration by clearly laying out the benefits and costs of restoration projects and their distribution among stakeholders. This report helps policymakers understand the full suite of benefits and costs associated with restoration and outlines the four main analytical tools that can be used to carry out this economic analysis. The report also summarizes existing research on the economic costs and benefits of restoration in Africa and Latin America and makes the case for developing a central database of research findings on restoration.
