The Capacity, Knowledge and Learning Action Plan is one of the main outputs of the Task Force on Best Practices led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and established to undertake system-wide capacity-development efforts to support the implementation of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030. It emphasizes the need to mainstream restoration knowledge in education and natural resource management programmes at all levels, including by instructing and empowering current and future generations of professionals, educators, policymakers, private-sector leaders, implementers, practitioners, researchers, youth leaders, community leaders and volunteers. It also highlights the importance of learning and sharing knowledge developed by Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and recognizes their contributions to current restoration efforts around the world.

This action plan identifies the gaps where knowledge products or capacity-development initiatives are needed across various stakeholder groups, based on the results from a global capacity needs assessment, a stocktaking of capacity-development initiatives and knowledge products, and several targeted consultations. It describes existing knowledge products and capacity-development initiatives that can be replicated or extended to address these gaps. Based on these efforts, the action plan specifies the terms of reference for eight key capacity- and knowledge-development initiatives based on a set of recommended priority actions.

Knowledge-sharing for change

In an effort to meet the growing demand for landscape restoration expertise, educators from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand gathered for two knowledge sharing workshops. These events shed light on the current state of natural resources management education and explored avenues for regional cooperation.

The first workshop on 17-19 October 2022, online, focused on identifying restoration-relevant competences covered by existing natural resources management curricula and other necessary competences that could be further developed through curriculum revisions, dedicated restoration courses, practical on-site teaching, and strengthened collaboration with restoration implementing agencies.

There is an increasing demand for knowledge and expertise in landscape restoration

Following the virtual workshop, educators convened in Dehradun, India, in March 2023. This time, attendees shared examples of field training and outdoor learning sites, such as the Myanmar Forest School Training Forest, which develops traditional forest management skills and investigates indigenous tree species and their biodiversity.

Participants jointly developed a work plan to strengthen collaboration on restoration education that was included in this workshop report.

The series of workshops were organized by the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy in collaboration with IUFRO’s Special Programme for Development of Capacities (SPDC), Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) and Wageningen University & Research. The events received support from the Republic of Korea’s National Institute of Forest ScienceMinistry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and U.S. Forest Service.

As part of the Restoration Education program, The Global Landcapes Forum (GLF), together with the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and Wageningen University and Research (WuR) brought together 25 participants for a hybrid workshop in Nairobi on Restoration Education for the Pan-African region.

The participants represented eight African universities and colleges, as well as members of GLF, WuR, IUFRO, CIFOR-ICRAF scientists, GLFx Chapters, and Youth in Landscapes (YIL) Restoration Stewards. The workshop achieved its key aims, resulting in the outline of a blueprint for the “Restoration Education” curriculum based on key concepts and principles for restoration and its processes.

Furthermore, possible delivery mechanisms to integrate this blueprint into existing curriculum based on collectively decided principles of transformative education were defined.

The workshop took place over three days and covered three main areas of designing and implementing restoration education:

Day 1 – Knowledge and content for restoration education • Defining restoration principles and key concepts of restoration for education; • Understanding the capacities needed for multiple stakeholders for landscape restoration; and • Collectively defining the content including learning objectives and expectations and key topics.

Day 2 – Delivery of transformative restoration education • Define principles of transformative education for landscape restoration; and • Define learning activities to deliver and integrate content across institutes and organizations.

Day 3 – Restoration education summit • Restoration education summit at GLF Africa; and • Setting the agenda for implementing restoration education.
